Trenching work conducted in 2006 |
 |
The Macusani South Project is the most accessible of Solex's 100%-owned projects covering 5,300 hectares. Extensive surface work has been completed at Macusani South including a ground radiometric survey complemented by extensive handheld scintillometer readings and a trenching and pitting programme. The first phase of drilling was completed in November 2008. A mobile leach test laboratory, operated by SGS Minerals, is on-site to demonstrate on a larger scale the viability of recovery of uranium in a simple leach circuit. Four tonnes of material from Macusani East is currently under leach.
Size/Location: The project covers 5,300 hectares just south of the Macusani East project. The general area is situated within the Province of Carabay, Department of Puno, in southeastern Peru, and lies within the relatively flat Altiplano of the Eastern Cordillera. The project area is located close to the town of Macusani in an area with better gravel roads for equipment and crew transportation.
History: Initial prospecting work began in September, 2006.
Geology/Mineralization: The mineralization is hosted by ignimbrites of the Upper Yapamayo Member of the Pliocene Quenamari Formation. Uranium mineralization observed through surface work appears to consist of secondary yellow to greenish yellow uranium minerals, such as coffinite, autunite, tyuyamunite, carnotite and torbenite.
Exploration: A 1,277 meter diamond drilling program was completed at Macusani South in the second half of 2008. The objectives of the program included:
- Testing for the possible extension at depth of the previously mapped outcropping uranium mineralized structures within the target areas
- Obtaining additional data to verify the results gathered from trench sampling for comparison purposes
- Obtaining additional data to verify the results from the six tonne sample extracted for metallurgical testing from test pits between drill holes
The initial review of the data suggests that the uraniferous mineralization observed at surface does not continue at depth despite the widespread anomaly outlined through radiometric surveys. However, Solex will continue to explore other prospective structures within the Quenemari Formation.
In August 2008, a mobile metallurgical test facility operated by SGS Minerals was delivered. The mobile leach test laboratory is intended to demonstrate on a larger scale the viability of recovery of uranium in a simple leach circuit. Three, two tonne samples collected at Macusani South have been delivered to the laboratory for test column leaching -- a four tonne composite sample is currently being tested. The facility has been expanded from its initial five tonne capacity to six tonnes to accommodate a wider range of material to be tested.
